We Need Keepers!

Gentlemen, if we fail to take further action on this most important matter prior to draft day, than at this time next year our posterity will be facing the 2008 draft without the benefit of keepers. We'll trudge through the season without the opportunity to consider the value of a player to be retained the following year, and not have the resulting value now vs. value next year consideration during trade negotiations.

I'm in favor of further discussing the keeper clause. Suggestions that allow continuation of keepers without encumbering our commissioner would be most welcome.

My desire would be to be able to retain three players in even numbered years -- one pitcher, one catcher, and one player of either skill. So, for the 2008 season we could retain three players from our closing-day 2007 roster. I propose that the price for retaining players be $10, or 15 percent more than a player cost the previous year, whichever is higher. So, if player x is drafted for $4, the owner would be charged $10 to keep him for the following year. If a player cost $14, it would cost $16 to keep the player. This solution allows for there to be keepers at reasonable prices (as opposed to no keepers at all, or keppers that are at such huge discounts that it strikes of being unfair).

Why not have keepers each year? If it's "unfair", that's just because someone drafted better.
